Everyone knows that part of taking good care of yourself is getting enough sleep. I sometimes battle with my kids about this (especially the older ones) but it is really very important!! Without proper rest your body gets worn down and is more susceptible to illness and crankiness!! Most of the people I talk to about this struggle with getting to sleep or staying asleep even when they have the best of intentions. We have developed a few tricks that we use at the Murphy house to help us when it comes to sleeping.
We have tried both the pre-made Young Living rollerballs and I have made my own at home. Both options have been successfull for us, it really is a matter of preference. The pre-made rollerballs are really nice, the consistancy is perfect and the oil is powerful!!! I also like the DIY version because we can tweak it for us. My personal favorite recipe is 15 drops lavender, 15 drops cedarwood and 2-3 drops of vetiver topped off with grapeseed oil. The empty rollerballs can be found easily on Amazon, my only recommendation is that you find one with a metal rollerball attachment.
One of my favorite things that happens at our house has to do with our bedtime diffuser routine. Frankie, my 8 year old, LOVES the diffuser at night. If I ever forget to fill it up, he comes down to let me know that it is out of water and I need to get upstairs STAT!! I love that he gets so much comfort from the oils! For the kids I usually diffuse lavender and cedarwood and we switch up the third oil depending on the circumstances. If there is a crud going around school we go for a preemptive strike and add thieves. Otherwise, I may add vetiver, one of the many eucalyptus options or peace & calming. Josh and I stick with the lavender, cedarwood and vetiver combo or go with peace & calming. Diffusing really helps with great sleep, not only do the oils work with your body to support sleep but the sound of the diffuser is theraputic as well.
Shutting your Brain Off!!
This may come off as preachy, but I really believe this wholeheartedly. You have to give your brain a chance to slow down before you ask it to go to sleep. The biggest part of this has been putting my cell phone down and turning off the television a little while before I go to bed. It’s nice to just have a few minutes to completely unwind at the end of the day. Sometimes it is as simple as just sitting quietly for a few minutes and other times I will pick up a book I’ve already read and just check out a bit. Whatever it is, getting away from screentime is a great way to signal to your body that the day is coming to a close.
Hope these tips can help support better sleep for you and your loved ones!!
Spring in Albuquerque
The beginning of spring is always exciting because it means getting out into the garden. The radishes, lettuce, beets, spinach and peas are popping up out of the ground with the promise of fresh veggies around the corner. Yesterday we transplanted tomato seedlings from their starter cups to the next size pot. We will transplant one more time before we put them out in the garden. This helps make a strong root system. We grow most of our food from seed so we get the varieties that we like best, it’s fun for us and it’s cheaper.
The not so fun part of spring is the wind we get every year and the watery eyes and sniffles that go with it. In the past I have taken over the counter tablets starting in late February. I admit that I bought them this year but I have been able to leave them on the shelf. I’m diffusing equal parts lemon, peppermint and lavender
all day long. I have an open kitchen, dining room and living room so I wasn’t sure what to expect. When I go outside and come back in, the smell is heavenly so I know the diffuser is working in this large space. On tougher days like today when the wind is to blow 40 mph I put one drop of each on my wrist and rub my wrists together. All three of these oils come in a starter kit. Give it a try. And try growing a few tomatoes too.
I think the best way to start this blog is with a little bit of info on who we are and what we’re doing here. First, thank you for taking the time to check it out, our hope is that it will be a blessing to you and the people around you!!
I’m Amber Murphy, a wife, mother of four, and lover of Jesus. I love healthy but delicious food and am therefore a healthy cookbook hoarder. I am completely obsessed with taekwondo and it has been a big part of my family’s healthy lifestyle for years. I have always been very concerned with what kind of food I am putting not just in my body but also those of my husband and four kids but I haven’t always condsidered the impact that our surroundings can have on us as well. I’ve learned all about the toxins in our homes and feel 100% compelled to share it with you!! I’m really excited to share the journey of using essential oils to help clean up the nasty chemicals in our lives and help support a more natural wellness. I shared essential oils with my mom over a year ago and together we have never looked back.
The quick answer of who I am is Cathy Bell, a retired teacher who loves great food, gardening, and taekwondo. Each of these parts of me is how I came to this place of enjoying a more natural way of life.
I’m a lover of great food but also a woman who has struggled with extra weight since having my first child, Amber. A few years ago I decided to get serious about those extra pounds and started reading everything I could find about food. That began the path of real awareness about cutting out the processed food and focusing on real food. It naturally followed that I would start growing as much of my own food as possible, all organically. The garden started with 4 raised beds and has grown to nearly 30. If you want to know what you are eating, grow it yourself. After retiring from teaching, I added taekwondo as a form of exercise and it was love at first class. I love that it is a sport that includes every part of the body as well as the mind.
As a teacher I am naturally curious and love learning. So when Amber introduced me to Essential Oils, I was interested to see how that worked. I’ve learned A LOT. It is the perfect addition to the health and wellness that has become so important in my life.
Our goal with this blog is not only to share essential oils and what we are doing with them, but also healthy recipes we have had success with, gardening ideas and whatever other things we find that we are loving. Hope to have you back again soon!!
